Digital News Report: Fake News, New Business Models, Social Platforms

If you haven’t yet discovered the European Journalism Observatory, you’ll find it a great resource for news and research about news media. The Observatory’s analysis of the Reuters Institute’s recently released Digital News Report 2017 is a good introduction to its work.

The Observatory, founded in 2004, is a network of independent non-profit media research institutes in 14 countries that disseminates research on media and promotes professionalism and press freedom.

The Reuters Institute’s 6th annual Digital News Report is based on a survey of more than 70,000 people in 36 countries and focuses on the digital issues that concern us all: fake news and the issue of trust, changing business models, and the role of social platforms.

A few of the highlights from the report:

  • Four in 10 of the survey respondents think news media does a good job separating fact from fiction. That compares with only one-quarter who think social media does a good job in this regard.
  • The percentage of people who pay for news varies widely from country to country, but remains low overall. Nevertheless, the Institute reports a jump in the number of people prepared to pay for online news in the United States, growing from 9 per cent to 16 per cent. Most of the new payments come from those under 35 years-old.
  • Just over half of respondents say they use social media as a source of news each week, with 14 per cent saying social media is their main source of news.
